The Grace App is an application and a picture exchange system designed for people with autism to encourage independent social interaction. With Grace, users select pictures to form semantic sentences others can read on the iPad screen. Grace comes with a basic picture vocabulary. Folders contain a selection of pre-loaded images, however, each folder can easily be edited to include the user's own images, which may already be stored on the device or photos taken via the camera while in Grace App. All images can be edited, deleted, or moved to suit the individual user. With practice, users can attempt their own speech and use the pictures as a back up. The user is encouraged to find, take, select images, and then point in order to communicate their needs. This app is designed to encourage and reward independent communication through use of images rather than speech generation. It attempts to ensure that the user is always understood.

The latest update of Grace App includes the ability to easily add or edit text onto any image in order to ensure that words are consistently prompted. There is an option to enlarge the sentence on the iPad view when sharing, and a choice of 3 card sizes for those with visual/mobility impairment. The user may choose an option on the Tap Card to speak for them (for users with additional needs). The default setting is "no sound" to encourage the user to attempt their own vocalizations with the pictures serving as a visual prompt.

Steven Troughton-Smith first became involved with writing iPhone software shortly after its initial release, developing for the system with only a compiler and reverse-engineered header files. He would e-mail his creations to a friend with an iPhone who would run the application and send a screenshot back. His first application, Nuker, was developed this way.

He became well-known on his release of Stack, an implementation of Apple Inc.'s Stacks feature of Mac OS X v10.5 "Leopard". He is also responsible for the port of id Software's Doom game to iPhone, partnering with ZodTTD for distribution and development.

Currently he has several applications on the iPhone App Store, including Lights Off, Speed, Nuker and SameGame.

Troughton-Smith also built the Grace App For Autism which has 'democratised the availability of language aides' and is the winner of many accolades and awards.
