Memorial highway will be unveiled Tuesday

Odessa American - 5/7/2018

May 07--State Rep. Brooks Landgraf and Taya Kyle will unveil highway signs Tuesday designating a portion of Highway 191 for her late husband, "American Sniper" Chris Kyle.

The Chris Kyle Memorial Highway will memorialize the native Odessan along the stretch of roadway where Odessans erected a statue in his honor in 2016.

Kyle was a famed U.S. Navy SEAL and Iraq War veteran considered the "most lethal" sniper in American history, a title he gained through 160 confirmed kills. Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield were slain in February 2013 by a troubled vet they were trying to help.

Kyle's life story was portrayed in the film "American Sniper."

Taya Kaya spoke at the July 2016 unveiling of the memorial statue, describing it as a tribute that is "going to be around forever, and it's going to be a place where people are going to be able to sit and reflect."

Last year, Landgraf won passage of House Bill 1483, creating the "Chris Kyle Memorial Highway."

The Tuesday ceremony at the statue will begin at 10. a.m.

State Sen. Kel Seliger and members of the Odessa Community Foundation, which raised funds for the statue, will also be present.
