Star Island announces winner of veterans raffle

Portsmouth Herald - 2/22/2017

PORTSMOUTH – The nonprofit Star Island Corporation announced the winner of its fourth annual U.S. military veterans raffle.

Allan Bedell, a retired Navy boatswain who spent more than 20 years working at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, was randomly selected to enjoy an all-inclusive vacation on Star Island for a week this summer with his family. Bedell lives in Tilton with his wife. His career operating Navy tugs on the Piscataqua River gave him many opportunities to be on the water but this will be the first time he’s visited Star Island at the Isles of Shoals.

"What an honor to be chosen to experience Star Island this coming summer,” Bedell said. “Spending a week with my family on the island sounds like the perfect getaway. I want to thank Star Island for honoring our military men and women. It was a pleasure to serve our country."

Bedell enlisted in 1980 and was stationed around the world before finishing his career at the shipyard. He retired in 2001.

“We want to recognize and support those who have sacrificed to serve our country," said Star Island CEO Joe Watts. "Our veterans raffle is one way we celebrate our veterans by offering a wonderful respite on our unique island off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine.”

More than a hundred veterans from around the country participated in this year’s raffle, which opened on Veterans Day.
