On Thursday, February 9, 2017, Jack Dempsey "Woody" Wood Sr., formerly of Centerville, woke as he did every day, giving thanks to his Lord for another day. Though his body was frail and tired, his spirit and will were strong. He lived life on his terms and left when his Lord finally called to him. He passed away peacefully Thursday to join his beloved wife, Kathleen. There was never a dull moment with him, as he enjoyed life to its fullest. Until the end of his time, his sense of humor remained with him. His memories he shared, including the funny stories he told and adventures he had been on throughout his life.Mr. Wood grew up in Alexandria, Va., and, under his father, Melvin, he learned the meaning of work ethic, which lead him on his path of self-employment as a general contractor, working along the East Coast as far north as Pennsylvania and as far south as Florida. As a young man, he served in the U.S. Army and was a combat veteran of the Korean conflict.Mr. Wood married, and he fathered two children. He later divorced and then met the love of his life, Kathleen. They married, had six children together and raised a granddaughter as their own over their 53-year journey together.During his lifetime, Mr. Wood was a proud Republican and avid member of National Rifle Association. He was a former Pennsylvania state constable and a wonderful neighbor and friend in his community. He loved his Lord and practiced the Lutheran faith. His fondest memories were of his wife and their life together. He loved West Palm Beach, Fla., Cadillacs, playing cards and apple pie and enjoyed antiquing. He was greatly loved by all his family and friends and will be missed by all.Deceased are his father, Melvin Wood Sr.; his mother, Sara Wood; a brother, Melvin Wood Jr.; a sister, Betty Wood; a son, Joe Wood; a grandson, Jesse Wood; and his beloved wife, Kathleen Wood.Surviving are seven children, Sara Ann Wood-Zerega, Jack Dempsey Wood Jr., Judith Diane Wood, James David Wood, Joann Denise Wood Matruski, Janet Dolores Wood and Jacob Daniel Wood; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.Mr. Wood also leaves behind his best friend and faithful companion, Cookie.Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
