Veterans head up Memorial Day events

May 26--Fallen veterans will be honored in several ways this weekend.

The Los Banos American Legion Post 166 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2467 are observing Memorial Day through several events across town starting Thursday and heading through Memorial Day.

Ceremonies will be held at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery and Los Banos District Cemetery on Sunday and Monday.

The American Legion and VFW will hold a flag-raising and school program starting 7:45 a.m. Friday at Volta Elementary. The ceremony will also occur at 8 a.m. at Lorena Falasco Elementary, 8:45 a.m. at Henry Miller Elementary, 9 a.m. at Mercey Springs Elementary and 10:30 a.m. at Los Banos Elementary.

On Sunday, a wreath presentation will commemorate the sacrifice of fallen veterans at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, 32053 W. McCabe Road, Santa Nella. The program starts at 10 a.m. with master of ceremonies 1st Sgt. Bryan Campbell of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Other speakers include Congressman Jim Costa and Roger Duke from the Modesto VFW and veterans center.

Also participating in the ceremony are the Vietnam Helicopters Museum, Santa Cruz Mobile Vet Center, Merced County Veterans Service Office and the SJVNC Patriotic Tractor & Float.

On Memorial Day, residents and businesses are urged to post their flags. Another ceremony will start 9:30 a.m. at the Los Banos District Cemetery, 16675 S. Center Ave.
