Veterans to take part in Waverly War Memorial Stadium rededication

Daily Review (Towanda, PA) - 8/31/2014

Aug. 31--WAVERLY -- It was Sept. 23, 1949 when the original Waverly'sWar Memorial Stadium was officially dedicated. Sixty-five years later, the reconstructed version of War Memorial Stadium will be rededicated with a ceremony held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20, featuring our area veterans.

Repairing the old concrete bleachers was the first in a series of upgrades made to the stadium, which was made possible with the help of funds from New York State. While the Waverly School District has invested $700,000 from their capital reserve fund, the State of New York dedicated $1.9 million to aid in construction.

Once the concrete project was finished, installation began on aluminum benches to cover the bleachers and new restroom facilities and ticket booths were built. They also completed an extensive renovation of the concession stand, installed a press box and poured new sidewalks on both Barker and Elm Streets.

With a vote held last December Waverly voters decided on the installation of artificial turf in the new stadium. The referendum was passed with residents overwhelmingly supportive of the grass alternative. Once the turf was laid down, workers installed a new scoreboard, goal posts and security cameras. They also installed stadium lighting, a sound system and created a new parking lot for spectators.

The rededication of the War Memorial Stadium is being planned to include all area veterans for a special ceremony in honor of those who have or are serving our country. All veterans who would like to be a part of the ceremony are invited to meet at 6:45 p.m. on Sept. 20, in the new parking lot next to the Waverly bus garage on Elm Street.

The football game will begin at 7 p.m. with Waverly High School taking on Thomas Edison High's varsity football team. The event will feature the music of the Waverly High School band and include a flag raising ceremony featuring the new lighted flag pole.

The stadium will be open to the public beginning with Waverly's first football game on Friday, Sept. 5, when Waverly plays Harpersville at 7 p.m.
