Rants & Raves DEADLINES

Hometown News: Port Orange, South Daytona, Ponce Inlet, Daytona Beach Shores - 7/6/2018

Yes, we do need help at the pedestrian crossings.

Try to make an attempt from the CVS Pharmacy cross over Indian River Boulevard to Chick Fil-A, it will be an adventure you won't forget.

Happily concerned

I went to the Concerned Citizens For Animal Welfare shot clinic at the Save the Animals store in Port Orange on Saturday.

It's a great group of people and accommodating location for both owners and pets.

Unsupervised children running amok

While enjoying a day at the beach, I noticed a group, a large group, of parents and kids.

The children were running everywhere, while the parents were setting things up for their stay in the soft sand area. Of course, out of at least 10 grown ups in the group, not one was watching the children. The children ranging from 5 to maybe, if lucky, 10 years old. The children running back and forth from the surf to the group area. It's a wonder that they didn't get run over ? not that the drivers were not paying attention, but the children had no clue. One child, who looked about 5, almost ran into the side of a van.

The adults still not paying any attention to the children, as if they didn't have any children, sitting in their lounge chairs. What was even worse is that when the kids were in the water, no parent was even close to supervise. The distance had to be at least 200 feet from group area to the shore line.

What has happened to parents today. My children never left my side while at the beach, and that was before the so-called no-drive zones. I'll guarantee, that if one of the children got hurt, the parent would be blaming the vehicle driver, or the lifeguard for not watching their children. It's a shame what has happened to today's society and, of course, as most will say, "Oh, my child was such a good child, and would never do anything like that." Wake up parents.

It's Independence Day

Can we all please call our nation's birthday by its true name, lest we forget what we are celebrating? It's Independence Day.

I mean, unless I missed the memo stating we should say, "Happy Fourth Thursday of November," and all the like. "Shrug."

In response to: ?Edgewater is not that bad'

I applaud you for volunteering at the food pantry, if that's how you like spending your retirement time, good for you.

But that is not what the rant was about, neither was how hot it is, or how people live in cars or the toll it takes on the homeless. The rant was about hard working people in this area needing more restaurant choices, some people work long hours and need a good quick fast food choice other than the options Edgewater has.

Not sure your quite getting the point, so I typed this real slow., More good choices for fast-food restaurants in Edgewater for the people who work for a living as some of us have to eat on the road and don't have the option of going in and sitting down to enjoy it.

The deadline for submissions to Hometown News in Volusia County is 5 p.m. Thursday for the next week's issue, except for Rants & Raves, which is 5 p.m. Friday. Deadlines are adjusted for holidays. For more information, call (386) 322-5924.

People like you

On a recent visit to Latitude Margaritaville my husband and I were treated as second rate citizens.

We have visited four times and one day a lady drove up and asked, "are you owners or lookers?" I responded "just started looking." She responded sharply, "ohhhh," and drove off. One home we were interested in was not in the lineup. We walked around the corner to ones under construction and explored.

Our last trip, however, helped make up our minds. We will not purchase there.

A man and his wife in a black Jeep pulled up and asked, "are you owners?" I simply responded "Not yet." They quickly left and immediately told the ladies up front we were "up to no good." When we were walking back to the models, a lady came quickly towards me and asked if I was part of the group that was exploring. She said, "People like you should not be over there."

People like me? Obviously you and the couple in the Jeep know all about me. She talked to me like I wasn't good enough to be looking around. The mentality of these owners is that if "they" don't approve of you, then you are not good enough to buy/live there. Would you turn away a man in shorts and flip flops ? you know, the main wardrobe of Jimmy Buffett himself? I have one thing to say ? I won't live near "people like you."

Helpful nursing staff

My name is Gerard. I have been undergoing chemo treatments at Halifax Health Oncology for the last few weeks.

I want to give a huge shout out to the nursing staff in that department. They work with professionalism, and are polite, courtesy. They are very compassionate with their patients. I give them all the credit in the world.

Little cars need lights

I am concerned about the Shriners Convention coming to Daytona Beach.

They are a great group.

However, these little cars don't have any lights and reflectors. Last time they were all over the back roads of Daytona, late at night. I am worried about their safety.

Too big an adjustment

Recently, the YMCA of Volusia County changed the membership fees.

While most fees decreased they eliminated the senior household membership. In turn each senior is charged individually. This created a 30 percent increase to the senior household. I feel this is an unjust fee adjustment. Those whose fees are included by their insurance carrier were not adversely effected.

Although we enjoyed the pool, I felt compelled to cancel my membership of five years. I do not understand the need for this change.

Remember Reality House?

Despite an 87.1 percent success rate, plus a low 4.8 percent recidivism rate, the Florida Department of Corrections is cutting Reality House.

Isn't it wonderful that our local millionaires donate millions for buildings or building improvement as long as they have their names attached to the buildings.

Maybe one would be willing to donate to keep Reality House if it could be revamped or perhaps someone who really wanted to help our community and the safety of our community without the fanfare.

Maybe Reality House needs a charity drive or a millionaire for two to help out.

Flight schools, plane noise lower property values

Does anybody agree the noise of planes from flight schools lower residential property values in New Smyrna Beach?

Back and forth all day long is the sound of those annoying flight school planes. It is like a song on the radio over and over. Pleasure for a few and misery for many.

Is the revenue generated from the flight school planes worth the repetitive noise pollution in our beautiful natural beach environment?

Great cashier at CVS

Last Thursday, I stopped at the CVS Pharmacy at Granada Boulevard and Nova Road.

As I was at the register, a terrible rain storm started. I though I would wait it out, but it continued to pour down.

The cashier seeing that I had limited mobility, went to the photo department and got me a stool to sit on. I have a hard time standing for any length of time. This was unsolicited and was a very kind gesture. If I remember correctly, the cashier's name was Michelle.

This was my first time to go to this CVS, but it will not be my last. They are lucky to have this lady.

In response to: ?Wasting good clothes'

I would like to comment on the letter concerning the donation of clothing to the Hospice Thrift Shop.

The writer was concerned that his/her donation of nice clothing was discarded by the organization. I am a volunteer at the Save the Animals Store, also located in Port Orange. We are a 501(c)3 (non-profit) company and we are dedicated to helping animals in our community. We would welcome your donation of clothes and just about anything else. We just ask that donations be in good condition. We also offer pick-up service for large items.

Come by and check us out.

Watch out for overcharges

My wife and I moved down here about a year and a half ago and we love it.

It's a great area with great people and lots to do. There is one thing, however, that took us by surprise. Every time we have gone to the doctor or dentist. we have been overcharged. Every single time.

Now, my wife is a fastidious bookkeeper and is always able to identify these overcharges, and every doctor and/or dentist office has been expedient with refunding the overcharge or crediting our accounts. I wonder if this might be happening to other people and if they are catching it as well as my wife. I hope this is not the case, but I find it hard to believe our case is the only one.
