Island City pours pints for Habitat

Winona Post - 10/18/2017

Island City Brewing Company and Habitat for Humanity are teaming up for a night to advance A Brush With Kindness home-repair projects, and you won't want to miss the fun.

On Friday, October 20, Island City will donate $1 from every pint sold to Habitat for Humanity. This all-ages event, with help from Art of the Rural/Outpost, will start at 5 p.m.with food for sale by Moosie's Home Cooking and Blooming Ground catering. Live music from the James Gang will start at 8 p.m. Come early for food, stay for beer and music, and help out Habitat for Humanity in its mission to bring people together to build homes, community, and hope.

The James Gang first rose to national acclaim in 1896 when they attempted to rob the first cinema in New York. Thinking it was a run-of-the-mill theater, they burst in hoping to interrupt the play and demand money and jewelry from both actors and audience members. Since they had not realized that it was a moving-picture house, the James Gang stood, transfixed, until startled into movement by the film of an oncoming passing train, whereupon they jumped directly into the arms of the waiting constabulary. Sentenced to 110 years of hard labor, the James Gang was finally released in 2005. They decided to quit their life of crime and become an old-time string band playing the music of their mis-spent youth.

The James Gang is composed of talented musicians from around the region, including Matt Cartier of Pert Near Sandstone; Meghan Dudle, formerly of the Ditch Lilies and Wild Goose Chase Cloggers; Adam Kiesling, formerly of Pert Near Sandstone and Corpse Riviver; and Matt Neil, formerly of the Mill City Grinders and Wild Goose Chase Cloggers.

Island City Brewing Company opened in March 2017. Owner and CEO of Island City Brewing Colton Altobel said, "As an organization that is proud to invest in our community, we are really excited about the opportunity to partner with our local Habitat for Humanity. We believe in what they are doing as an organization and see the difference they make in our community. Please join us for a fun night of music and help Habitat repair homes for our neighbors in need."

The event includes a suggested donation of $5; all ages are welcome.
