Spartanburg County applies for grants to help 27 agencies

March 25-- Mar. 25--The Spartanburg County Community Development Department has applied to fund 27 projects and agencies under its Community Development Block Brant and Home Investment Partnership programs this year, including:

* Rehabilitation of one substandard owner-occupied home in the county, $2,021.

* Greer Community Outreach Center. Construction of one single-family, three-bedroom, two-bathroom home in the county, and to increase the supply of affordable housing for low-income families, $108,000.

* Habitat for Humanity of Spartanburg. Construction of two new homes in county, $186,055.

* Nehemiah Community Revitalization Corporation. Construction of one two-bedroom duplex as part of Faulkner Cove Phase II in the county, $85,424.

* Spartanburg Housing Authority Tenant-Based Rental Assistance. Housing assistance for about five households in the county, $55,000.

* Countywide owner-occupied housing rehabilitation and reconstruction for four substandard owner-occupied homes, $332,657.

* Arch Ministries. A portion of salaries for after-school care and academic assistance for about 40 low- to moderate-income children, most of Hispanic descent, in the Arcadia/Una area, $11,150.

* Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Upstate, for the mentoring "at risk" program, matching 25 volunteer mentors with low- to moderate-income youth in the county, $12,150.

* Boys & Girls Clubs of the Upstate. Funds for a program that provides child care and activities in character, education, health, life skills, the arts and fitness, as well as snacks and dinner for about 25 children from unincorporated areas at Pacolet Elementary School, $13,800.

* Carolina Miracle League. For executive director's salary, providing a baseball league for children and adults with disabilities and special needs in the county, $11,900.

* Chapman Cultural Center. Scholarships to benefit about 15 county residents for access to Mayfair Art Studios in Arcadia, $9,210.

* Christmas in Action. A portion of the salaries of the executive director, program coordinator, repair project supervisor and part-time warehouse manager. Ten households will be assisted with housing rehabilitation and repairs, $5,000.

* Fair housing activities. Funds to carry out federal mandates identified in the county's analysis of impediments to fair housing choice, $5,000.

* The Forrester Center for Behavioral Health. Funds for programs to provide community-based treatment to reduce recidivism for about 50 low-income residents in the county, $12,900.

* Goodwill Industries of the Upstate/Midlands. Funds for a job training and employment program to benefit about six people, $11,040.

* The Haven, community outreach. A portion of case manager costs with its program to assist about 50 homeless people to obtain stable living conditions, $8,650.

* The Haven, emergency shelter. Costs for a portion of the case manager associated with emergency shelter and case management to about 25 homeless families, $8,650.

* The Haven, security deposits. To help pay for security deposits for 10 high-risk families who are ready to return to a home, $5,000.

* Middle Tyger Community Center counseling program, for services to about 50 low- to moderate-income clients who would otherwise not be able to afford counseling services, $13,800.

* Spartanburg School District 6, AIM to Work program to benefit about 15 low- to moderate-income at-risk students, $9,650.

* Spartanburg Regional Health Services District. Funds to provide transportation for about 20 county residents to get to work, $14,150.

* Upstate Family Resource Center. Funds for part of staff costs to help low-income families with job or budget issues in Spartanburg School District 2, $14,150.

* Urban League of the Upstate. Funds to administer a program encouraging about eight low-income and at-risk youth in grades 9-12 with educational and mentoring services, $5,000.

* Hope Center for Children, to renovate the kitchen and incorporate life skills to benefit about 50 children, $197,435.

* Middle Tyger Community Center, to replace an outdated phone system in the original facility and add phone service to the new senior center, $35,000.

* Project Hope Foundation, to repair and replace plumbing in the Woodruff Autism Clinic at the former B.J. Workman Hospital, which provides behavioral treatment and a day program for people with autism. About 50 people will directly benefit from the upgrades, $40,000.

* Una Community Volunteer Fire Department, to purchase extrication tools (Jaws of Life), $74,908.
